What is the World Guitar Record? The annual guitar festival is most of all an occasion for collective play, meetings and exchange of experience, and during this event, an attempt to break the Guinness record is made.

World Guitar Record on 1 May in the Wrocław Market Square and online

This year, thousands of guitar fans will once again come together to break the World Guitar Record. One of the biggest guitar music festivals will take place on 1 May, both live in the Wrocław Market Square and online. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Leszek Cichoński's educational work, we have planned a series of free lessons preparing the participants to beat the record – the musicians will teach you to play such guitar hits as 'Hey Joe' or 'Little Wing' via Facebook and on YouTube.

The first edition of the now legendary guitar festival dates back to 2003. It was then that Leszek Cichoński founded the Great Guitar Orchestra which performed the famous Jimi Hendrix's hit song 'Hey Joe' in the Wrocław Market Square. With 588 participating guitarists, a new Guinness record was set. About a dozen years later, the event in Wrocław gathered 7,423 guitar fans. In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 18th edition of the festival was held entirely online. On 1 May, 'Hey Joe' was performed by as many as 7,998 guitarists from across the world, who joined in to play from their homes, gardens and balconies. The concert broadcast attracted a total of over 110 thousand viewers, from Poland to Spain to the UK and the United States.

This year's edition is scheduled for 1 May. – We are trying our best to meet in the Wrocław Market Square, says Leszek Cichoński. The world's greatest guitar orchestra will also play online. – Music has no borders. We want to ensure that everyone who will not be able to come to Wrocław can join the record-breaking. This time we are beating the world guitar record, which is why playing 'Hey Joe' both in the Market Square and on the Internet counts a lot, he adds.

30 years of Cichoński's guitar bible. Educational initiative

2021 marks 30 years since Leszek Cichoński published his course Blues-Rock Guitar Workshop (at that time it came with cassette tapes, nowadays with CDs), which has become a true bible for several generations of guitarists. To celebrate the round anniversary of Cichoński's educational work we have prepared a series of free online lessons. Headed by the leader of the guitar orchestra, musicians will teach how to play the pieces that we will hear on 1 May in the Wrocław Market Square. These will include 'Hey Joe', 'Little Wing' and 'Voodoo Child' by Hendrix and 'Kiedy byłem małym chłopcem' by Tadeusz Nalepa. The schedule of classes will be announced soon.
